After some time of not posting due to being sick, I made the decision to start a fresh in 2015. This blog will no longer be active but you can now find me at katyharmston.blogspot.co.uk. I do apologies for not updating this blog for some time.

My new blog which is just named Katy Harmston will be a lot more personal, more of a online journal about my life and loves. DIY Choker Necklaces

My recent obsession has to be the choker necklaces, I wear them daily. They are very easy to make and dress up any outfit. 

I spent a few weeks looking for one I really liked which wasn't stupidly overpriced, but no matter how much I looked I wasn't happy. I decided to take myself to the crafts store and pick up some interesting cords, ribbons and embellishments. I bought half a meter of each so I had enough material to work with. They were very inexpensive to buy, ranging from 50p - £3.00, depending on the detail of the material.

You will need:

Material/Cord/Ribbon

Press Studs/Hooks&Eyes/Velcro

Embellishments (charms, beads or buttons)

Sewing Needle

Cotton Thread

For this tutorial I did use press studs but either of the above is absolutely fine!

Huge Beauty Haul Video

I have been going a little crazy recently with beauty products. I came to do another haul video and realised I had too much stuff, I couldn't possibly fit everything into one video. I have been buying a range of beauty products and fashion items from all different brands and stores. I decided to split my haul into 2 separate videos, a Fashion Haul and Beauty Haul.

My beauty haul video is a little long so I do apologise about that, as I said I have been loosing control with my bank card! DIY Platt Back Top

Its been really warm in England recently which has been really nice as I have been living in summer clothing. The English summers aren't always the best but I think this one has been pretty decent, so for the summer period my most recent DIY had to be a summer top. 

The platt back tops are so effortless stylish, whether you want a crop top, a trim around the bottom or go for more casual look. You can dress them up or dress them down, its a top that offers a lot of ways to wear and style with other items.

 I was going for a more everyday summers casual look with these coral checked shorts and some back flip-flops. A very comfortable and easy outfit in the summers heat.

To do this I used a Mens Medium T-shirt from Primark that my mum found in a cupboard, so you don't need anything fancy for this tutorial. The process of making this DIY wasn't complex and didn't take forever to make. It would be a perfect festival piece if you wanted something completely unique, as I said you can design it however you like.

Its a really cheap way to create something new without spending a lot. You can use a womans top but it will need to be a bigger size as you are pulling the material. I used a mens T-shirt as I wanted to demonstrate how easily you can transform a item, whether its something you don't wear or its damaged in some way. 

There is always a quick fix!

You will need:

A T-shirt

Scissors (preferably fabric scissors)

Rubber Bands 

A Sewing Needle and Thread

Press Studd Fasteners

 To complete the look I had to put my hair in platt's of course, with light makeup and green eyeshadow as I don't like to wear a lot of makeup throughout the summer. This is a easy boho hair style to get your hair out of your face while looking on trend!

DIY: Matching Two Piece Set from a Dress

First of all let me apologise for not updating this week! It feels like I have been trying to edit this video for ages but its finally complete. 

This matching two piece was made from a dress I bought from Primark for £2. The dress was not my size but I loved the print, I thought it was so vibrant and would be great for the summer. I bought it to do this DIY as it was only £2, so if anything went wrong I wouldn't loose anything. I tend to do this a lot. This was quite as easy task and anyone could do this as there is no sewing machine involved. If you have a sewing machine then great, but if not that isn't a problem.

I wanted to completely change the dress to show you how, but some steps are not necessary. So if you want something sweet and simple then this is the DIY for you. 

The great thing about matching two pieces are that they are multi purpose, you can style the skirt and top separately with different outfits.

Dress

To make this DIY easier I would definitely consider not cutting out the back and only using material for your belt as it will be more easily washed.

DIY: Tiffany's Inspired Necklace

This DIY is inspired by the Tiffany's & Co Colour. This type of blue/green is the statement colour for their brand. I had an old necklace that I didn't really like or use, but it had been stored in my jewellery box for months. I want to share with you how I transformed this old and cheap looking necklace into a jewellery statement piece that can be worn with most things.

DIY: Decorate your boring belts

I'm sure you have a load of those useless boring belts you get with trousers and dresses. I found a few the other day and decided to make use of what I already had.

This belt was a full length belt and is plain tan. I cut the belt down and decided to create a high waisted Boho belt, nice for the summer. I believe its always better to create something from imagination, then its your own unique design. If you want to replicate a designer item that is fine, as we all can't afford the high designer prices. 

This is a great way to make use of items that you may not use and a big money saver. If you bought a high waisted Boho belt it probably would be quite pricey due to the detail.

So with a bit if creative and crafts this is how the belt now looks. This was a very easy task and took no longer than an hour. I applied some flowers, pearls and extra details to tidy up the belt. If your going to make something, it still needs to look like you didn't make it otherwise it defeats the purpose. The idea is for people be like "I love that where did you get it from?", this is also a major confident booster as a designer, enhancer or creative; whatever you want to call it. I think this belt is super cute for the summer or even now to wear with high waist jeans or a top. Its quite a girly item with the flowers and pearls, but what girl doesn't like flowers right?

I love this belt, it sits in a really flattering place for me as I am quite curvy, and it costs me no more than £4.50; but I already owned what I needed. So all in all this item cost me nothing, just a little time and effort and here you have it, your brand belt you can put in your closet and know that you made it.

If you want to jazz up your old belts with anything this should work quite well!

DIY Lace Shoes

If your anything like me then you will love shoes, I mean who doesn't! I can honestly admit I have a bit of an obsession! I can't really remember the first time I tried a pair of high heels but I bet it was funny. Strutting around in your mums heels! My other obsession is definately being a crafty person, I like to transform anything I can into something that's my own, whether I'm creating something from scratch, wearing a cardigan backwards as a top or adding a crafty touch to something I've bought. There's definately nothing more humiliating than going out and someone's wearing the same outfit as you! Not a good look!

So I decided to do something with these nice cream heels, I bought these from eBay for a cheap £6. I have only worn them once as there slightly too big for me, typical! So they have been sat in my closet for months doing nothing. I took it upon my self to come up with ideas that make them look unique but in season. I didn't want to replicate something I had seen, I just wanted to create something that would transform them and increase there value and appearance; but on a budget.

My final choice was to create some heels that I don't have, that would challenge myself within DIY Fashion and look completely different to the originals. As you can see in the above images I applied lace all over the shoes and added a black trim around the shoes. The trim makes them look very high quality, it's always the smallest details that create the most impressive look. As you can see they also have a red sole, this will always add value to your shoes! 

To do this you will need

Shoes - eBay - £6

Lace - Craft Store - 0.5 Metres £2.25

Black Trim - I used black elastic as it had a very silky shine - Craft Store - 3 Metres £2.10

Soft material to line the inside on the shoes - Already Owned - You can use any type of material just make sure it's soft

Cuticle stick and some tweezers - Already Owned - You can purchase these from most drugstores if you don't own them.

All Purpose Glue or Fabric Glue - Crafts Store - £2.00

Black sharpie or permanent Marker - Already Owned - You can purchase these from most Craft or Homewear Stores if you don't own them.

TOTAL = £12.25

1. Wrap the shoe in the material

2. Apply the glue to attach the lace

3. Roll over the glue to seal

4. Apply material to line the inside of the shoe

5. Glue the trim to the edges

6. Ta daaa...
